Red Dead Redemption May Get That Remaster After All
A South Korean ratings board has a new listing of 'Red Dead Redemption' for consoles.
A remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption could be coming to current gen consoles.
This often rumored re-release of one of Rockstar Games’ most beloved titles comes via a listing on the South Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee posted earlier this month. It was first reported by Gematsu Wednesday.
The listing shows that publisher Take Two Interactive filed its application for a “Red Dead Redemption” to the South Korean regulatory board on June 5. The listing’s classification number infers that the release would be for consoles. The Messenger has reached out to Take Two and Rockstar Games for comment regarding the listing.
Released in May 2010, Red Dead Redemption is still widely considered one of Rockstar's Best games by critics and users alike. Rockstar San Diego’s open-world take on the dying days of the American wild west received numerous game of the year awards at the time and was one of the biggest commercial successes of the year. Its 2018 follow-up and prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, was met with similar reception.
While this is the most concrete proof of a supposed remaster’s existence, this wouldn’t be the first time such rumors have circulated. Some eight months after the release of the 2021’s Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: The Definitive Edition, Kotaku reported that Rockstar Games supposedly canceled plans to remake both Red Dead Redemption and 2008’s Grand Theft Auto 4.
Kotaku's sources speculated that poor public and critical reception to the exceptionally broken re-releases of the Playstation 2-era Grand Theft Auto games, helmed by the company’s mobile port-house Grove Street Games, could be the reason for the scrapped plans.
A Red Dead Redemption re-release would be particularly good news for owners of Sony’s more recent consoles, for whom the game is not readily available. Last October, the game was removed from Sony’s cloud service, Playstation Now, which was the only way to play the game on both the PS4 and PS5 consoles.
Xbox players can still play the game if they own a physical or digital copy via backwards compatibility.
It is also worth noting that the game was never released on PC. A possible remaster would be a way of finally getting the game to an entirely new player base, as while the South Korean listing is for consoles, it does not preclude a PC listing following at a later date.
