New Apple Store Device Will Make Buying a New iPhone Less Annoying

The stores will reportedly use a new device to ensure a new phone has the latest software before it's opened

Having to update a brand new iPhone to the latest version of iOS could be a thing of the past.Apple

A new tool headed to Apple stores will make setting up a new iPhone much faster, allowing unsold devices to be updated before they're opened, according to Bloomberg.

Often, one of the many steps involved with a new iPhone is ensuring it has the latest version of iOS, but updating to that software can be time-consuming — a frustrating process for users excited to try out their new device.

Currently, an iOS upgrade requires an iPhone to be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi, and its owner must respond to several prompts. Now, Apple plans to introduce a "proprietary pad-like device" in stores to "wirelessly turn on the iPhone, update its software and then power it back down" with an unopened iPhone placed atop it, Bloomberg reports. That way the device is pretty much ready to be used as soon as it's opened.

There aren't many details about the device at the moment. It'll arrive in Apple Stores before the end of the year.
