New York Yankees relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the remainder of the 2023 season for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy, the league announced Wednesday.

Cordero accepted the suspension, according to the MLB announcement, and has been placed on the restricted list. He's suspended without pay, effective Wednesday.

The 31-year-old right-handed reliever appeared in 31 games this season for New York, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 34 strikeouts and 10 walks in 32 2/3 innings pitched. He had emerged as a key piece of the Yankees bullpen, whose cumulative 2.82 ERA ranks best in MLB.

"I found out about the suspension last night," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. "He came to me a couple days ago and gave a heads up as to an investigation going on and that's kind of the extent of it."

Cordero's ban will last the remainder of the 2023 season, or 76 games. It's one of the longest MLB has given under the policy, surpassed in length by the suspensions of Trevor Bauer (194 games), Sam Dyson (162), Jose Torres (100), Hector Olivera (82), and Yankees teammate Domingo German (81).

MLB does not announce what it investigated or found during the process when suspending players under the policy.

“I was pretty upset,” Yankees star Aaron Judge told reporters. “I know a lot of guys on the team are upset. This is in the league’s hands, and the league handed down the suspension. Hopefully he learns from this and becomes a better person.”

In a statement, the Yankees said they "are fully supportive of Major League Baseball's investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero.

"There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy."

The league said Cordero "will participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program supervised by the Joint Policy Board."
