Wisconsin senior quarterback Tanner Mordecai is out indefinitely after breaking his throwing hand in the Badgers' loss to No. 24 Iowa on Saturday, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Mordecai underwent surgery and there's not yet a specific timetable on his return to action for Wisconsin (4-2), which lost, 15-6, on Saturday. Mordecai went 12-for-20 with 106 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the game. He exited in the second quarter after his right hand hit Iowa linebacker Jay Higgins' helmet on a completed pass.

"It doesn't look good for a little while," Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell told reporters after the game. "He couldn't grip the ball. We'll have to make sure we find out what the deal is tomorrow, see how long that may last."

Redshirt freshman quarterback Braedyn Locke, a transfer from Mississippi State, entered the game when Mordecai went down, going 15-of-30 with 122 yards and a pick. Thamel reported that Locke will start this week.

Through six weeks, Mordecai threw three touchdowns against three interceptions with 1,127 passing yards, eighth in the Big Ten. He's the second injury at a key spot for Wisconsin, which lost tailback Chez Mellusi for the rest of the season with a broken fibula.

Wisconsin plays Illinois (3-4) this week before hosting No. 3 Ohio State (6-0).
