Alabama is apparently making a change at quarterback, as 247Sports' John Talty reported Friday morning that Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner is expected to get the start for the No. 10 Crimson Tide's road matchup against South Florida on Saturday.

Buchner would replace redshirt sophomore Jalen Milroe. Milroe started Alabama's first two games, completing 60% of his attempts for 449 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

Buchner transferred to Alabama in April, joining the program after two seasons with the Fighting Irish. His commitment to the Crimson Tide marked a reunion with former Notre Dame offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees, who was hired to the same position by Alabama in February.

The former four-star prospect appeared in 10 games as a freshman in 2021 as the backup to Jack Coan, then started last season as the starter before injuring his shoulder in Notre Dame's 26-21 loss to Marshall in Week 2.

He returned for the program's matchup against South Carolina in the TaxSalyer Gator Bowl, passing for 273 yards along with three touchdowns and three interceptions, adding 61 yards on the ground and two more scores. Notre Dame won the contest 45-38, with Buchner being named the game's MVP for his efforts.

Alabama is 1-1 on the season, as the Tide won their season opener against Middle Tennessee 56-7 and lost to Texas 34-24 last Saturday. That loss marked the program's first nonconference home defeat since 2007, head coach Nick Saban's first season.

Saban told reporters this week that he considered inserting Buchner into the game during the loss to the Longhorns, but he never discussed it with his staff.
