Teresa Weatherspoon Will Be Next Head Coach of Chicago Sky: Report
Weatherspoon previously served as an assistant for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans
The Chicago Sky are finalizing a deal to make Teresa Weatherspoon the franchise's next head coach, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.
Weatherspoon previously served as an assistant for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans from 2019 until this past June, when she and the organization parted ways.
Prior to her time in New Orleans, Weatherspoon was the head women's basketball coach at Louisiana Tech, her alma mater, from 2008-14, amassing a 99-71 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
As a player, Weatherspoon led Louisiana Tech to the NCAA title in 1988 — the same year she made her Olympic debut. Prior to the launch of the WNBA in 1997, she played for pro teams in Italy and Russia.
During her eight-year WNBA career, Weatherspoon played seven seasons for the New York Liberty before closing out her career with Los Angeles. She was a five-time WNBA All-Star and a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. The Texas native was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2019.
The Sky finished the 2023 season at 18-22, clinching the No. 8 seed for the postseason before bowing out to the top-seeded Las Vegas Aces, 2-0, in the first round. In July, head coach James Wade resigned to become an assistant with the Toronto Raptors, with Emre Vatansever — who was named interim head coach and general manager — going 11-13 in his place.
