Simone Biles on Intimate Wedding to Packers’ Jonathan Owens: ‘I’ve Never Had So Much Fun in My Life’

It seems safe to assume that the wedding of an Olympic Gold medalist and an NFL player would be extravagant and involve an extensive 144-person guest list. But, for Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens, this was the opposite of what they wanted.

“We could have had so many more people, but we really wanted to make it as intimate and as special as possible," Biles told Vanity Fair of their very intentional guest list. “I was like, ‘Not to knock your football coach from third grade, but baby, when was the last time you talked to him?’ ”

The pair got married last April in a small civil ceremony in Houston, where they both lived at the time, but had a celebration with friends and family in Mexico a month later.

“I’ve never had so much fun in my life,” Biles said. “I was 19 when I won my first Olympics, and I was like, How am I supposed to top this? My wedding topped it. It was the greatest feeling ever.”

Almost immediately following the wedding, Owens signed with the Green Bay Packers after three seasons with the Texans, and had to move out to Wisconsin while Biles stayed in Houston.

The adjustment was hard, but for two athletes who are both chasing individual dreams, the distance is seemingly worth the hardships.

“I cried a lot,” Biles said. “We’re both so busy, so it’s not like I’m sitting [around] waiting for him to come home, but it’s just hard.”

Despite this, Owens has found a home in Green Bay, and Biles appreciates the support her husband and his teammates get from the Packers fans.

“We love being with the Packers organization [and] Lambeau,” she said, naming Green Bay’s home stadium. “The fans are…I wouldn’t even call them crazy; they’re dedicated. They love their players as if those are their children.”

While it isn't every week, Biles does have the opportunity every once in a while to attend a game and cheer her husband on. But she isn't just any football wife, her own fame plays a factor in the attention she receives.

“It’s a little bit weird because I’m like, This is definitely not my gig,” she said of seeing posters of herself in Green Bay. “But I know how excited [the fans] are.”

Owens contract with the Packers is up at the end of this season, so there is no telling what the couple's situation will be in a few months. But for now, they certainly look to be making the most of it.
