The Denver Broncos knew they had to make a decision on Russell Wilson, but the timing did jolt many around the NFL world.

Wilson was benched with the Broncos a game outside the AFC's last Wild Card spot -- albeit a 7% chance to make the postseason per NFL.com -- ostensibly for fiscal reasons, meaning not only his season, but career in Denver is likely over.

Notwithstanding this, head coach Sean Payton contended the elevation of Jarrett Stidham, and subsequent demotion of Wilson, was primarily to "get a spark offensively."

Late Wednesday night, Wilson made his first remarks on the situation, writing on X (formerly known as Twitter); "God's got me. Looking forward to what's next."

It is truly unclear what may be next for Wilson should the Broncos do what many except and cut him this offseason.

Per multiple reports, the Broncos are choosing to bench Wilson in order to keep from paying a $37 million guarantee, which triggers on March 17 should he not be able to pass a physical.

As part of Wilson's five-year, $242 million contract — signed as part of a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 — the 35-year-old quarterback is already guaranteed $39 million next season, as part of $124 million in total guaranteed money.

Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, Wilson is expecting to be cut by the Broncos in March, and has known about the possibility of getting released after this season for two months.

Denver reportedly spoke to Wilson's representatives in late October, saying that he would lose the season and get benched if he didn't defer the injury guarantee trigger.
