Philadelphia Flyers’ Scott Laughton on NHL Banning Pride Tape: ‘You’ll Probably See Me’ Wearing it
Laughton said if the league wants 'to say something, they can'
The NHL may be banning players from using Pride tape, but that won't stop Philadelphia Flyers center Scott Laughton.
Laughton, 29, told reporters, "You'll probably see me with the Pride tape on that night anyway," on Wednesday in a strong rebuke to the league's policy.
"If they want to say something, they can."
In recent seasons, NHL teams have sported Pride-themed warmup jerseys, and players have used Pride tape on the sticks as well. However, the league issued a memo to all 32 teams on Tuesday, banning the use of the tape.
Laughton is not the only player pushing back against the ban. On Wednesday, Minnesota Wild defenseman Jon Merrill told reporters, "If anyone does it, what is the league going to do?"
"Take me off the ice, give me a penalty? Then you look bad as a league," Merrill added.
"I don’t know. It’s upsetting. Just disappointing. Then you look bad as a league. I don’t know. It’s upsetting. Just disappointing."
