NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Wants to Ban the Eagles’ Signature ‘Tush Push’ Play: Report
Goodell reportedly wants to see the play 'removed from the game entirely'
The Philadelphia Eagles may soon no longer get to push quarterback Jalen Hurts to pick up first downs if NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has his way.
Goodell wants to see the Eagles' signature "tush push" play "removed from the game permanently," according to The Athletic.
Philadelphia's "tush push" play is a quarterback sneak play in short-yardage situations. Hurts takes the ball and is pushed forward by players in his backfield to add extra momentum behind him, which increases the offense's chance of picking up positive yardage.
In short-yardage situations, Philadelphia has gone to the tush push with an almost certain probability of getting the yards needed since it began running the play last season.
Other teams have tried to copy the play, including the Kansas City Chiefs, who failed to succeed with the play on a fake field goal. No team has had the same effectiveness as the Eagles and Hurts.
The NFL competition committee will review the play this offseason. There are no members of the Eagles organization on the competition committee.
