Patrick Mahomes Regrets Yelling at Referees and Complaining to Josh Allen After Penalty Erased Touchdown vs. Bills

Patrick Mahomes says he regrets how he acted after NFL referees erased a go-ahead touchdown in the Kansas City Chiefs' 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

After Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was called offsides (which rarely ever happens to an offensive player), the Chiefs were stripped of a touchdown on an improvisational play when Kelce threw a lateral pass to Toney, who ran into the end zone.

Mahomes was seen aggressively berating the referees after the call. After the game, when he went to shake hands with Bills quarterback and his former golf teammate Josh Allen, Mahomes greeted Allen by saying that the the penalty was "the worst call" he had ever seen, and then walked away.

Mahomes said he regrets those actions during an interview with 610 Sports in Kansas City on Monday.

"Obviously, you don't ever want to react that way," Mahomes said. "Can't do that, can't be that way toward officials or really anybody in life so I probably regret acting like that. But more than anything I really regret how I acted toward Josh after the game, because he had nothing to do with it."

Mahomes added that he doesn't want to set a bad example for kids watching the game.

The two-time MVP's behavior at the end of Sunday's loss has come under scrutiny by many fans since Sunday. Many pointed out that it was uncharacteristic of Mahomes and the image he has embodied in the NFL since his first MVP season as the Chiefs' starting quarterback in 2018.

However, despite regrets for his behavior, Mahomes he wasn't surprised he acted that way based on the nature of the call, as he couldn't understand what had happened in the moment.

"I didn't have a great explanation for it," Mahomes said. "I tried to get an explanation and I didn't really get one. I've seen it now, and if he didn't check, and they weren't good, then it is a foul, I mean, it's something you see rarely see called in the NFL and so, but it was a foul."
