Patrick Mahomes Wants to Follow Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter by Owning a Team in His Own Sport — Who Has it Worked For?
Mahomes is already the youngest MLB owner in history
Patrick Mahomes is already looking ahead to his post-playing career at just 28 years old.
The Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback told ESPN that once he is done playing, he hopes to own an NFL team. Mahomes referenced Tom Brady as an example of another aspiring NFL owner, as Brady reached agreement to buy ownership stake in Raiders, however his stake has not been approved.
"Eventually, when I'm done playing," Mahomes said when asked if he wants to be an NFL owner. "I think Tom (Brady) is trying to do it right now, but that's definitely where you want to get to. I love this sport and want to give back in any way possible. When I'm done playing, obviously I'll be a Chiefs fan, but at the same time I want to have that competitive edge I've always had my entire life."
Mahomes added that he would not be looking to purchase a stake in a team before he is finished playing, however he is still looking to add to his pro sports team ownership portfolio.
"I'm always looking around," he said. "I can't do it in the NFL while I'm playing, so I'm always looking around at other sports. It's hard to get in all sports, NBA and all that different type of stuff, but I'm always keeping my ears open. If they give me the opportunity, I'm going to jump at it."
Mahomes is already a pro sports owner. He previously bought an ownership stake in the Kansas City Royals in July 2020 at just 24 to become the youngest MLB owner in history. He had just signing a 10-year $500 million contract with the Chiefs earlier that month.
Mahomes to that portfolio by buying into the ownership group of Alpine Formula One race team on Tuesday.

If Mahomes were to become an NFL owner, he would join Brady in a list of other famous star athletes who ended up becoming owners in the sport they played in, including Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter.
Jordan purchased the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats in 2010 for $275 million, later rebranding them as the Hornets in 2014. During Jordan's 13-year run, Charlotte went 423-600, the 26th-best record over that span, never won a series and failed to make the playoffs for the last seven years. Jordan sold his majority stake in the Hornets in June for $3 billion — more than 10 times more than what he spent — making it at least a financial victory even if he it came with many on-court losses.
Jeter led a group that purchased MLB's Miami Marlins in 2017 for $1.2 billion. During Jeter's four-year tenure as owner and team CEO, the Marlins went 218-327, finishing with a winning record only once at 31-29 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Jeter sold the Marlins in February 2022 for $44.8 million.
