The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to updated gambling policies that will heighten the punishments for players who bet on NFL games, but will lessen the consequences for those who bet on other sports while at the team facility, per CBS's Jonathan Jones.

A memo sent out to teams on Friday states that commissioner Rodger Goodell will determine violations on a "case-by case basis."

The strongest punishment listed in the new policies is a "permanent banishment from the NFL" for any actual or attempted fixing of a game.

Other punishments include a minimum one year suspension for betting on an NFL game and two years minimum if the bet involves the suspected player's own team, and indefinite suspensions with a minimum of one year for inside information and tipping, and third party or proxy betting.

The new punishment for betting on other sports while at a team facility has three levels. The first violation results in a two game suspension, the second is six games, and the third is a year, all without pay.

We periodically review the NFL Gambling Policy to ensure that it is responsive to changing circumstances and fully addresses our commitment to protect the integrity of our game," Goodell said in Friday's memo. "In recent weeks, we have consulted with many of you and with the NFL Players Association to ensure that our policies are clear, properly communicated, and focused on protecting the integrity of the game and the reputations of everyone connected with the NFL."

Goodell also explained that the league is working with the players association on a program that will be available to players so they can be educated on the changes in policy.

As a result of the policy changes, Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams and Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Nick Petit-Frere will both be reinstated on Monday, two weeks earlier than anticipated. Both Williams and Petit-Frere were originally given six-game suspensions for violating the gambling policy, but will only have served four upon their return.

Williams will be joining and already thriving Detroit defense that ranks eighth in the league in receiving yards per game at 257.3 and has scored 26.5 points per game through its first four games. The No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 draft missed the first 11 games of last season due to a torn ACL that he suffered in the CFP National Championship. In his six games with the Lions Williams only had one reception on nine targets, but his one reception resulted in a touchdown.

Petit-Frere will provide some much needed depth to the Titans offensive line that has allowed 13 sacks on quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the second highest total in the league. The former 2022 third-round pick started all 16 games as a rookie.
