ESPN and the NFL are in advanced talks for the league to acquire an equity stake in Disney's sports media empire, according to the New York Post's Andrew Marchand.

As part of the deal, ESPN would assume control of NFL Media — which includes NFL Network, NFL.com, Red Zone, NFL Films and NFL+.

The NFL has been trying to sell NFL Network for a while now as the league doesn't necessarily make money from its own network.

ESPN, which already has the ESPN+ streaming service, plans to go direct-to-consumer in 2025, offering all cable-free programming.

As part of its plans, ESPN has discussed deals with the NFL, NBA and MLB.

ESPN currently pays the NFL about $2.6 billion per year for rights that include airing 25 games, including all 17 weeks Monday Night Football, Saturday regular season games late in the season and playoff games.
