New England Patriots star pass rusher Matthew Judon will undergo surgery on his torn bicep on Wednesday, and is out indefinitely, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter reported that Judon, 31, could miss the rest of the season, although he will attempt to return at some point this year.

Judon suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of New England' 38-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday — the most lopsided defeat of head coach Bill Belichick's storied career.

A Pro Bowler the last four years, Judon had racked up 13 total tackles, five tackles-for-loss and four sacks this season. Last season, he tied his career-high in total tackles (60), and set a new career-high in sacks (15.5). The latter mark gave Judon the third-most sacks in a single season in team history.

Judon signed a four-year, $54.5 million contract with New England in March of 2021, after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens. This past offseason, New England restructured his deal, bumping his guaranteed salary for this season to $14 million -- he currently carries the sixth-highest cap hit among edge rushers in the league, per to Over the Cap.

Patriots' inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo Sr. told reporters on Tuesday that multiple players will have to step up in Judon's absence, particularly rookie defensive end Keion White. A second-round pick out of Georgia Tech, White has just one total tackle in the first four games.

"Keion's going to play more. Simply said," Mayo said. "We really need him to step up."

At 1-3, New England is tied with the New York Jets for last place in the AFC East, although the Patriots hold the tiebreaker over New York thanks to their 15-10 Week 3 victory over the Jets. New England hosts the New Orleans Saints at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
