Montse Tomé Named As New Spain Women’s National Team Coach Hours After Vilda Fired
Montse Tomé, a former assistant, will be the first woman to serve as head coach of the Spanish women's national team
Hours after firing head coach Jorge Vilda, Spanish football federation RFEF announced the new Spain women's national team head coach: Montserrat "Montse" Tomé.
Per RFEF's statement, Tomé will be the first woman to hold the role.
Tomé, a former player, served as Vilda's assistant coach since 2018. Tomé has also been involved in Spain's national youth academy. Beyond winning the 2023 Women's World Cup, Spain took home both U-17 and U-20 World Cup titles in 2022.
Her first game serving as head coach will be UEFA Nations League matches against Sweden and Switzerland on September 22 and 26, respectively.
Tomé led the mass staff resignation in the wake of Rubiales' refusal to resign. All members of the women's national team staff, except for Vilda, stepped down in protest.
