Max Scherzer Out Until June or July 2024 With Herniated Disk
Scherzer underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his back and will miss up to three months in the final year of his contract
Injury issues are beginning to plague ace Max Scherzer's tenure with the Texas Rangers. Scherzer underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his back that will keep him out until next summer, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
Scherzer strained his teres major after eight starts for the Rangers last season, missing most of September and the American League Division Series.
Then, Scherzer exited Game 3 of the World Series with a back injury and never returned to help Texas win the Commissioner's Trophy.
Now, he will miss up to three months to start the 2024 season.
Scherzer, who is entering his age-39 season, was traded to Texas at last season's trade deadline. The Rangers only have Scherzer under contract through 2024, and the New York Mets will pay most of his $43 million salary.
The eight-time All-Star has won a pair of World Series titles, first with the Washington Nationals in 2019, then this year with the Rangers.
