Marshawn Lynch Says He Laughed in Pete Carroll’s Face After Super Bowl Interception
Lynch said this week that Carroll 'put us in the history books as the dumbest call in football history'
Nearly a decade since the Seattle Seahawks blew a chance to beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, Seattle star running back Marshawn Lynch remains displeased with head coach Pete Carroll's decision.
In the final minute of the fourth quarter with the Seahawks down four, Seattle had the ball at the one-yard line. In a widely-criticized move, Carroll elected to have quarterback Russell Wilson pass on second down, rather than give Lynch the ball. The decision backfired as the Patriots' Malcolm Butler came away with a game-ending interception, resulting in New England's fourth Super Bowl.
"I go by Russ, and I just hear him like, 'Ah man, I'll get him next time,'" Lynch recanted this week on the"Club Shay Shay" podcast. "As I hear this s--t, I usually don't take my helmet off, but I take my helmet off, and I go right to Pete Carroll, and I hit his ass with the biggest 'AHAHAHA.' And at that point, I go to the locker room. I'm out. I don't want to see all this s--t going on. I don't see the last few plays. I'm in the locker room.
"I think I ran into Lenny Kravitz. [He said,] 'Oh s--t, hey, what's up, man?' looking like, 'Hey, don't you got a game?' 'Ah yeah, that s--t over.'"
Lynch, now 37, was a five-time Pro Bowler and twice led the NFL in rushing touchdowns, helping the Seahawks win Super Bowl 48 over the Denver Broncos. But Lynch also said this week that Carroll's infamous play call prevented the Seahawks from becoming a dynasty, adding that the Seahawks are "suffering from it still to this day.”
"You know you took a dream away, you took a moment away," Lynch continued. "You take a dynasty away because then you in position that, hey, you win two Super Bowls, maybe I don't want to be the highest-paid corner or the highest-paid safety or the highest-paid receiver.

"Nah, spread that cheese through the whole team so we can bring everybody back and we can go try to do three. Maybe four. Let's see what we can get out of it...Not only do you take away all that s--t, but you put us in the history books as the dumbest call in football history."
Lynch later said that he and Wilson — now with the Denver Broncos — didn't have much a relationship off the field, saying he doesn't have his phone number.
“I respect Russell as a player and a teammate," Lynch said. "Anything I say because of the situation throwing a pick on the goal line, not giving me the ball, him leaving from Seattle … anything I can say is going to come off as malice or as if I’m a hater. ll take Russ and I’ll put him right there at quarterback and I’ll rock with him because I’ve done that.
“As far as anything else … Can’t pick up the phone and call old boy or nothing … I don’t got his number.”
