Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp Ruled Out By Coach Sean McVay For Season Opener
Kupp suffered a hamstring injury on Aug. 1
After suffering a hamstring injury on Aug. 1 and a subsequent setback in his rehab, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp has been ruled out for the team's season opener against the Seahawks on Sunday, head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Wednesday.
"Not much information," McVay said. "Just dealing with some soft tissue stuff."
Kupp's status was listed as day-to-day following last week's setback, but McVay indicated that a stint on the IR is not out of the question for the former Super Bowl MVP. Placement on the IR would sideline Kupp for at least the first four games of the season.
After a dominant 2021-22 season that saw Kupp win the receiving triple crown with 145 catches for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns en route to winning Offensive Player of The Year and Super Bowl MVP, the wide receiver struggled with injuries last season.
Kupp missed eight games in the 2022-23 campaign due to a high ankle sprain that ultimately required surgery. Compared to his historic numbers in 2021-22, Kupp finished last season with just 75 catches for 812 yards and six touchdowns.
The 30-year-old signed a three-year, $80-million extension in June 2022, that begins following this season and keeps Kupp under contract with Los Angeles through 2026.
With Kupp unavailable, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford will likely look to receivers Van Jefferson and Tutu Atwell, as well as tight end Tyler Higbee to power the Rams offense.
