Lexi Thompson Will Make History At The PGA Tour’s Shriners Children’s Open
Thompson, 28, will become the seventh woman to tee it up in a PGA Tour event
Lexi Thompson is set to become the seventh woman to compete in a PGA Tour event.
The 28-year-old, ranked 25th in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings, has received a sponsor's exemption into next week's Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas, the tour announced on Wednesday.
Thompson's exemption into the event was first reported by ESPN's Michael Collins.
“Shriners Children’s support of children with specialty pediatric medical challenges for over 100 years is inspiring, and as we all know, these conditions do not discriminate” Thompson said in a statement. “I’m hopeful that my ability to play with the men next week at the Shriners Children’s Open sends a great message to the young women that you can chase your dream regardless of how hard it is.
"I cannot wait to come to the city of Las Vegas and I’m grateful to Shriners Children’s for this opportunity to spend the week alongside these inspirational kids.”
Once she tees it up during the opening round on Oct. 12, Thompson will join Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Shirley Spork, Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley, Michelle Wie West and Brittany Lincicome as the the only women to play in a men's Tour event.

She will attempt to join Didrikson Zaharias as the second woman to make the 36-hole cut on the PGA Tour -- Didrikson Zaharias, one of the 13 founders of the LPGA, made the cut at the 1945 Phoenix and Tucson Opens.
Sorenstam, who competed at the 2003 Colonial -- now known as the Charles Schwab Challenge -- missed the cut by four strokes, while Wie West's best showing came at the 2004 Sony Open in Hawaii, where as a 14-year-old, she beat 47 players en route to missing the cut by one stroke. Wie West, who retired this summer after five LPGA wins and one major title, competed in eight PGA Tour events.
Thompson, who turned professional in 2010 at the age of 15, has 11 LPGA wins, including her lone major title at the 2014 Chevron Championship. She also has eight other top-three finishes in major championships, and has competed for the U.S. Solheim Cup team six times -- including last month, when she went 3-1-0 as the Europeans retained the Cup via a 14-14 tie.
She has also played in the QBE Shootout, an unofficial PGA Tour event in Naples, Florida, six times.
