Las Vegas Raiders To Start Rookie QB Aidan O’Connell With Jimmy Garoppolo Out
O'Connell, 25, is the Raiders' fourth-round pick out of Purdue and earns the nod over veteran Brian Hoyer
The Las Vegas Raiders will start rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell in Week 4 with starter Jimmy Garoppolo out, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
With Garoppolo in concussion protocol, the Raiders (1-2) will ride with O'Connell on Sunday vs. the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) in what will be his first career start. O'Connell, 25, is the Raiders' fourth-round pick out of Purdue and earns the nod over veteran Brian Hoyer, who's second on the team's official depth chart.
In the preseason, O'Connell went 43-for-62 (69.4%) for 482 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions. At Purdue, he threw for 9,219 yards and 65 touchdowns with 30 interceptions.
Garoppolo, who was ruled out Saturday, didn't travel with the team. He suffered the concussion last Sunday in a 23-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Chargers defense has struggled this season, giving up more than 450 yards per game. They'll likely be without stars Joey Bosa and Derwin James due to injuries, which could make things a little easier for O'Connell.
