Jameis Winston Says Offense Overruled Dennis Allen to Score Final Touchdown Against Falcons

Up 41-17 on the division rival Atlanta Falcons in what turned out to be Arthur Smith's final game with Atlanta, the New Orleans Saints defied head coach Dennis Allen's orders and scored another touchdown.

While Allen told quarterback Jameis Winston and the offense to take a knee, they refused and handed the ball to running back Jamaal Williams out of their victory formation for his first touchdown of the season.

It led to Smith fussing at Allen on the field after the game.

After the game, Winston explained what happened to reporters at his locker.

“I apologize to D.A. because the play was victory," Winston said. "But I also explained to D.A. that it was a team decision. I asked the guys, ‘What do you want to do?’ We know how much Jamaal means to this team, and I understand from D.A.’s perspective. So I give him that. But DA didn’t condone that at all.”

New Orleans was at the one-yard line because of a Tyrann Mathieu interception where was stopped short of the goal line on the return. Winston did say, however, that Mathieu had no influence on the offense's decision to go for the touchdown.

With the Green Bay Packers defeating the arch rival Chicago Bears on Sunday, the Packers claimed the final NFC Wild Card spot instead of the Saints and and the Seattle Seahawks.

Now, the Falcons will prepare for the eighth pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and everyone will have to wait and see how Atlanta responds in their two games against New Orleans next season.
