As Michigan fans celebrate the Wolverines' rousing national championship victory, they get something else: a whole day to themselves.

On Tuesday, January 9, 2024 — one day after Michigan took home its first national championship since 1997 — the State of Michigan and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer officially decreed that the day would be known as "Michigan Wolverine Day," as announced by University of Michigan president Santa Ono.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Whitmer encouraged Michigan fans to "paint the state maize and blue" and congratulated the team for their victory.

"A big congratulations to the amazing coaching staff, support personnel, and student-athletes who poured their heart and soul into every play. You've made us all incredibly proud. Hail to the Victors!" Whitmer wrote.

Students and fans flooded the streets of Ann Arbor after the win. In a crowd on South University Ave., thousands of students chanted "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!" and sang along to "Mr. Brightside," an unofficial anthem in Michigan Stadium.

But there is more celebrating to come, with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh saying that the team wants to have a parade in Ann Arbor, per 247 Sports' Alejandro Zúñiga.

"Who doesn't love a parade, right?" Harbaugh said.

Details are still being determined. For now at least, the Wolverines are having a day.
