Errol Spence Jr. Invokes Rematch Clause for Second Fight with Terence Crawford
After suffering his first professional loss in July at the hands of Crawford, Spence is ready to run it back in a higher weight class
Former three-belt welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. has invoked his rematch clause for another fight against Terence Crawford, his trainer Derrick James confirmed to ESPN.
Crawford unified all four belts in the welterweight division with his ninth-round TKO against Spence in July, becoming the first male fighter to become undisputed champion in two weight classes.
They've dominated the welterweight division since 2017, and meeting the 147-pound weight limit has become increasingly difficult for Spence. After the loss to Crawford, Spence said he was done with welterweight and moving to junior-lightweight.
As part of the contract for the July fight between Spence and Crawford, the loser had 30 days after the fight to invoke their rematch clause for a fight later this year, and the winner would decide if the fight takes place at welterweight or junior-lightweight.
Crawford has expressed an interest in moving to junior-lightweight, setting his sights on current undisputed 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo. In the week following the Spence fight, Crawford told The Breakfast Club he thought Spence should take some time off to recover physically and mentally before fighting him again.
The four boxing commissions have not announced what will happen to Crawford's belts if the Spence rematch happens at junior-lightweight.
