Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff Talking Contract Extension With GM

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff could be in line for a new deal to stay in the Motor City.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes told The Detroit News on Friday that the front office is currently engaged in an open dialogue with Goff's agent, Ryan Tollner, and guard Jonah Jackson's representatives about contract extensions.

"We've kept open dialogue with their agents in camp, and I think the transparency is that's been good," Holmes said. "We'll see how it goes."

Goff, 28, is under contract through the 2024 NFL season. He's due $61 million by then under the deal he originally signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Goff was fresh off a Super Bowl appearance for the Rams when he signed that deal, but only played in Los Angeles one more year. The Rams traded Goff, his big contract, two first-round draft picks and a third-round pick to Detroit for veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

So far, Detroit has gotten 31 starts out of Goff, with a 12-18-1 record as a starter. Still, Goff has produced for the Lions offense, passing for 7,683 yards, 48 touchdowns to just 15 interceptions and a 95.8 passer rating in his first two years in Detroit. He made his third Pro Bowl last year, leading the team to a 9-8 record and came just a tie-breaker scenario shy of the playoffs.

If an extension is in the works for Goff, it could dwarf the deal he signed with the Rams four years ago. The NFL's quarterback market saw a reset this past offseason, with Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles signing a $255 million extension over five years and Baltimore Ravens former MVP Lamar Jackson signing a five-year, $260 million deal.

Even if Goff isn't able to match Hurts' and Jackson's historic paychecks, he can be confident in getting a sizable raise from the Lions based on New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who signed a four-year $160 million deal this offseason. Jones' new annual salary is $7 million more than Goff's. Jones didn't make a single Pro Bowl prior to signing that deal, while Goff has three and a Super Bowl appearance.

Detroit has big plans with Goff under center this year, as Holmes told reporters he has "very high" confidence that the team will win the NFC North this year.

"We've gone through a lot of darkness to get to this point," Holmes said. "But, that's where the grit comes in place, in terms of just not really wavering, putting your head down or getting discouraged. We've put the focus in building the best roster we can and really just getting the best football players."

The Lions haven't won a division title since 1993.
