Chicago Blackhawks rookie center Connor Bedard was placed on injured reserve with a fractured jaw on Saturday.

Bedard suffered the injury during Chicago's 4-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Friday night. The 18-year-old took a shot to the jaw from New Jersey forward Brendan Smith in the first period, and did not return.

The setback interrupts what has been a highly productive first season for the No. 1 pick in last June's NHL Entry Draft. In 39 games, Bedard has dazzled fans, tallying 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists) for the Blackhawks.

Given his spot on the injured list, Bedard will miss at least the next seven days — sidelining him for, at a minimum, Chicago's upcoming matchups against the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets.

The Blackhawks, with 24 points, are in last place in the Western Conference's Central Division.
