The Arizona Diamondbacks have extended general manager Mike Hazen's contract, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

Hazen's extension runs through the 2028 season, with a team option for 2029, per the report. The deal comes in the wake of ESPN's Buster Olney reporting last month that Hazen, 47, was a candidate to take over as head of baseball operations for the Boston Red Sox.

Hazen had previously worked in the Red Sox front office from 2006-16, serving as general manager under former Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski from 2015-16. The Red Sox parted ways with chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom last month.

Hazen, 47, has been Arizona's head of baseball operations since October of 2016. This season, the Diamondbacks finished second in the National League West at 84-78, and currently lead their Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0.

Since Hazen took over, the franchise is 495- 537, reaching the postseason twice -- in 2017, and this season. During his tenure, Hazen has added the likes of Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno to the Arizona batting order, while also acquiring starting pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen.

He also traded away longtime Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018, in exchange for pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, infielder Andy Young and a Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, which the team used on outfielder Dominic Fletcher.

The former three players are no longer on the roster, while Fletcher made his debut for the club this season. In 28 games, the 26-year-old batted .301, hitting two home runs and 14 RBIs.

Goldschmidt, on the other hand, was named the NL MVP last season.

The Diamondbacks face the Brewers in Game 2 of their best-of-three series in Milwaukee on Wednesday night.
