Arizona Coyotes Defenseman Travis Dermott Uses Pride Tape on Stick Less Than Month After NHL Ban
Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott used Pride Tape on his stick during Arizona's 2-1 home victory against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.
The choice comes after the NHL sent a memo to all teams earlier this month banning the use of rainbow-colored tape on sticks during games. Other LGBTQ-related celebrations, including Pride Nights, are not able to be accompanied by a corresponding change in player uniforms.
Dermott, 26, is in his first year with the franchise. In 2021, during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he told reporters "I have some family that is involved in the LGBTQ community. So I'd like to step forward and in the future take part in supporting them more vigorously,” with regards to why he used Pride Tape on his stick.
Plus, Front Office Sports reported on Saturday night that when the NHL memo was sent out, Dermott got in touch with Pride Tape officials to order more.
The NHL told The Athletic that the league “will review [McDermott using Pride Tape] in due course." The Coyotes host the first Pride Night of the season on Oct. 30 against the Los Angeles Kings.
