House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., needs to "find a way to do his job," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Tuesday.

During a "Morning Joe" appearance covering the state of the economy, Yellen was asked about a potential shutdown ahead of the close of the fiscal year at the end of the month.

"There's absolutely no reason why we should have a government shutdown," she said.

The treasury secretary pointed the blame at House Republicans. A number of conservative lawmakers have made demands like deeper spending cuts to the federal budget. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and others have avoided supporting continuing resolution proposals, something Yellen said should be done at this point.

"Speaker McCarthy needs to find a way to do his job," she said.

Yellen added a potential shutdown would be a "shock" to the economy though she said they have not estimated the potential impact, not knowing how long such a standstill could last.
