White House Warns Congress It Is Running ‘Out of Time’ on Ukraine Funding
Identical letters were sent to House and Senate leadership stressing that cutting off funding will 'kneecap' Ukraine
The White House on Monday sent a letter warning Congress that lawmakers are "running out of time" on Ukraine funding.
White House budget chief Shalanda Young alerted lawmakers that without congressional action by the end of the year, the U.S. will run out of resources to obtain more weapons and equipment for Ukraine as it continues to fend off Russian forces.
"We are out of money — and nearly out of time," Young said. "Cutting off the flow of U.S. weapons and equipment will kneecap Ukraine on the battlefield, not only putting at risk the gains Ukraine has made, but increasing the likelihood of Russian military victories."
Identical letters were sent to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
The warning comes as lawmakers continue negotiations over approving President Joe Biden's emergency funding request for Ukraine, which is part of a larger $105 billion spending package that includes aid to Israel, the Pacific and border security. Republicans have maintained that border security policy changes must be included in the package.
Schumer announced last week that he intends to bring the package up for debate this week in the Senate, adding that border policy remains a "hyper-partisan issue" that is holding up aid.
