A new Wall Street Journal poll shows Americans say they have noticed economic improvements as inflation eases — however, views of how President Joe Biden has been handling the issue are still, in a majority, negative.

The number of Democrats and independent voters who say the economy is in excellent or good condition has increased by 9 percentage points each, with two-thirds of Democrats having a positive outlook, while 36% of independents shared that outlook. Just 8% of Republicans said they think that the economy is in excellent or good condition.

Overall, three in five voters, regardless of party affiliation, disapprove of how Biden has handled the economy, and the persistent inflation the country saw earlier in the administration could be to blame — hitting a peak of over 9% in June of 2022.

Inflation has since stuck to a rate of around 3.2%, and Americans have noticed — 23% believe the country is moving in the right direction, up 8 percentage points from April.

Overall, unfortunately for Biden's reelection campaign, Americans believe that the economy in general has gotten worse since he took office: 58%, compared to the 28% who think it got better.

The survey had 1,500 participants, all registered voters, and was conducted between Aug. 24-30. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
