Two-thirds of Americans think the House should elect a Speaker as soon as possible, a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll shows, while a quarter of respondents say they do not care whether someone is elected or not.

According to the poll, 67% said they see the need for a new Speaker as being urgent. A majority of voters of all parties agreed, but the most significant number was among Democrats with 86% saying the House needs to elect someone as Speaker fast.

The numbers for Republicans and independents were significantly lower, with 57% of Republicans saying it was an urgent priority and 59% of independents saying the same.

House lawmakers also face a general lack of trust with voters, with just 32% of respondents saying they had "some" confidence in House leaders and 35% saying they had "little" confidence. Only 4% of people surveyed said they have "a lot" of confidence in House leaders.

House Republicans will meet on Monday with the nine members who have entered the race for Speaker.

The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters and was taken between October 17-20, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
