Trump: ‘I’m Not Going to Be a Dictator,’ Says Political Violence ‘Is Never Accepted’

The former president neglected to acknowledge the Jan. 6 insurrection or his role in seeking to overturn the 2020 election

Former president Donald Trump attempted to downplay his recent comment that he would be "a dictator for a day" if reelected, telling a Fox News town hall in Iowa that his remark was taken out of context.

"I said I'm gonna be a dictator for one day, and we're gonna do two things: The border, we're gonna make it so tight you can't get in," Trump said. "And the other is energy, We're gonna drill, baby, drill."

He added: "After that, I'm not gonna be a dictator."

Trump was also asked whether he rejects political violence, agreeing that "is never accepted" while conspicuously avoiding any mention of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection that occurred during his presidency as he and his supporters attempted to overturn the 2020 election results.

"I'm the one that had very little of it," the former president said of political violence. "Take a look at wars, I wasn't involved in wars. We beat the hell out of ISIS. We won 100%."
