Former President Donald Trump leads the GOP primary field by more than 40 percentage points in Georgia despite his ongoing legal battle in the state, according to a new poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The poll showed Trump with 57% support among likely Republican primary voters, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis coming in second with 15%. No other candidate reached double digits, though 14% of Republican primary voters said they were undecided.

In a hypothetical head-to-head between DeSantis and Trump, the former president led the Florida governor by 33 points.

Half of poll respondents said they think the charges Trump is facing in Georgia are serious or somewhat serious, while 44% responded that the charges are not serious.

The poll was conducted among 807 adults from Aug. 16-23, just before the former president was booked in Georgia last week on charges stemming from his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the state. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
