Trump Demands Maine Secretary of State Recusal in 14th Amendment Challenge
Lawyers for Trump cited three of her tweets referring to the Jan. 6, 2021 'insurrection'
Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded that Shenna Bellows, Maine’s secretary of state, recuse herself in an ongoing 14th Amendment challenge to him.
Lawyers for the embattled former president sent Bellows a letter demanding the recusal, citing three of her tweets referring to the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks at the U.S. Capitol — one of which described the event as an "insurrection."
“Using similar language, the Challengers have claimed that the events of January 6, 2021, constituted a violent insurrection and that President Trump somehow poses a danger from which Maine voters must be protected. Thus, the Secretary has already passed judgment on the Challengers’ core assertions,” said the letter.
Two of the tweets in question were posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, in 2021 and 2022.
