Former President Donald Trump, after losing the 2020 election, believed a conspiracy theory that he could be reinstated in the White House after leaving office, a new book written by ABC's Jonathan Karl reports.

The theory, promoted by some Trump allies including MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, suggested the former president could move back into the White House in August 2021 and could reveal evidence that would prove mass voter fraud.

"I'm not going to explain it to you, Jonathan, because you wouldn't — you wouldn't either understand it or write it," Trump said in a phone call with Karl in July 2021.

Several close Trump allies dismissed the idea that the former president could be reinstated, including Trump lawyer Jenna Ellis and former Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Fla.

Karl said that he learned while writing the book that the former president was discussing the theory often while in private conversations.

Karl's book "Tired of Winning" is scheduled to be out on Tuesday.
