Progressives Pushing Biden to Make Social Security Focus in Possible Reelection Battle With Trump: Report

This plan comes at a time when recent polls show Trump leading Biden in key swing states

Progressives in the Democratic Party are lobbying President Joe Biden to call for an expansion of Social Security to sharpen the contrast between himself and Republicans, who have promised not to cut entitlements.

Politico reported that internal polling found voters trusted Biden (41%) more than former President Donald Trump (36%) on the issue of Social Security.

Biden included Social Security expansion as a campaign plank in 2020, but has been unable to act on it as he has presided over a divided Congress throughout his White House term.

The progressives pushing Biden to focus on the issue again believe that it is a stance that will resonate with voters, according to Politico's sources, and that their idea of increasing taxes on the rich to pay for it is "a Democratic wedge issue."

This plan comes at a time when recent polls show Trump leading Biden in key swing states.
