Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams will visit Mexico and the Darien Gap later this week to learn about and discuss the path asylum seekers take to reach the U.S. and how their arrivals have impacted the city.

The mayor will spend time in Mexico City before traveling to Puebla, Mexico — the origin of many immigrants who have left for New York City.

The mayor will later travel to Quito, Ecuador and Bogata, Columbia, before ending his trip at the Darien Gap, where many asylum seekers pass through as they travel to the U.S.

New York City is experiencing an influx of migrants as the city struggles to house and process those seeking asylum. Both Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, D, have called on the federal government to provide more assistance.
