A New Mexico District Judge on Friday ruled in favor of the Democratic-led legislature that crafted a new Congressional map for the state. Republican lawmakers had accused the legislature of diluting GOP votes.

The Republican Party filed a lawsuit claiming that the new Congressional map's split of the southeastern corner of the state, a conservative area, violated the state's Equal Protection Clause.

"Our claim is excessive gerrymandering," Daniel Gallegos, attorney for the Republican lawmakers, told the state's justices. "That this constitutes that egregious nature of gerrymandering."

The 5th Judicial District Judge Fred Van Soelen, however, ruled that Democrats did not violate the New Mexico Constitution and the new map remains in place.
