Speaker Emeritae Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., recalled the storming of the Capitol on the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 riot as a "perilous moment for our democracy" in a social media post.

"It was an attack not just on the Capitol, but on our Constitution," wrote Pelosi. "And some who carried out the assault under Lincoln’s dome were carrying the Confederate flag. But on that dark night, Congress again projected America’s strength and resolve."

Pelosi was presiding over the joint session of Congress to certify the 2020 presidential election results that day, and recalled the crowd chanting "about wanting to put a bullet in my head." She thanked the law enforcement officers, particularly the ones who were injured protecting the legislators.

"Many sustained long-lasting physical and emotional scars," said Pelosi. "Some officers later lost their lives."

Former President Donald Trump and his allies have continued to minimize the violence of the day, with some even suggesting it was a "false flag" operation by American law enforcement.
