The Michigan state Capitol has started using a new artificial intelligence software on Monday that allows its surveillance cameras to identify firearms in Capitol grounds and buildings.

The software ZeroEyes detects potential firearms and, in three to five seconds, alerts an operations center staffed with former military and law enforcement officers, as reported by the Detroit News.

Use of this technology, which was already installed in a local high school in Oakland County, will cost the state government about $3,000 per month.

"I want visitors and those that come to work here every day to understand that, irrespective of external circumstances, our building remains a secure haven, and ZeroEyes plays a pivotal role in ensuring that safety," Rob Blackshaw, executive director for the Michigan State Capitol Commission, told the outlet. "The accuracy of its technology and proficiency of its staff are truly exceptional."

A rise in political violence was also a deciding factor.

"We are currently witnessing an alarming surge in political violence, and the Michigan State Capitol’s dedication to ensuring the safety of its staff and the community is commendable," ZeroEyes CEO Mike Lahiff said in a statement.
