Former Speaker and GOP California Rep. Kevin McCarthy said on Friday he will vote for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to be the new Speaker.

“I think everybody has a right to run,” McCarthy told reporters. “I think Jim’s better prepared in this process to be speaker.”

Jordan is now the frontrunner to become House Speaker after his first opponent Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., abandoned his bid.

Rep. Austin Scott launched a spoiler bid on Friday, and the Georgia representative is now Jordan's main challenger.
