McCarthy After Tour of Maui: ‘Sheer Devastation’
McCarthy said he wants to ensure children return to schools as soon as possible

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said he witnessed "sheer devastation" in Maui while visiting the island to tour areas affected by the recent wildfires on Saturday.
"How do we rebuild?” McCarthy said. “That’s the important part of why we’re here. We want to make sure we do it in the right manner. We want to work with the community.”
McCarthy said he wants to ensure children return to schools as soon as possible and that buildings are rebuilt in a way that prevents similar destruction from occurring again. He also praised emergency responders who helped residents evacuate.
Wildfires devastated Maui in August, marking the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. in more than a century.
