Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said she thinks politics is an "ugly business" when asked to respond to those calling her a "narcissist" after she voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from the speakership last month.

"When you are on the rise, people are going to attack you, no matter what," Mace said during an interview with Fox's Neil Cavuto. "I care about what my constituents and my state and the people across this country that I'm trying to support. I care what they think."

The interview came after the Washington Post published a report quoting fellow lawmakers calling Mace a "narcissist."

Mace was one of eight Republicans who voted alongside Democrats to oust McCarthy from the speakership in October. The South Carolina lawmaker came under scrutiny for her vote and for accusations of "flip-flopping," which she has defended — even wearing a scarlet letter to a GOP candidate forum following the historic vote.
