Former President Donald Trump was warned last May by his then-lead attorney Evan Corcoran that he had to fully comply with the subpoena issued by the Justice Department for all classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, according to a new ABC News report.

In voice memos recorded the day after the conversation, Corcoran detailed a conversation between himself and Trump during which he told the former president that the FBI may search his estate if he did not comply with the subpoena. Another Trump attorney told Corcoran shortly afterwards that if he urged Trump to comply with the subpoena, the president was "just going to go ballistic."

"We've got a grand jury subpoena and the alternative is if you don't comply with the grand jury subpoena you could be held in contempt," Corcoran said he told the president in the voice memos.

The voice memos have become a part of the evidence collected by special counsel Jack Smith in the classified documents case against Trump in Florida, where he is charged with taking highly-sensitive documents to his Mar-a-Lago resort and later hindering federal officials' efforts to obtain those documents. The former president pleaded not guilty to all 40 counts in the indictment and is scheduled for trial on May 20, 2024.
