A recount in a Louisiana sheriff race has confirmed that the victor won but just one vote after more than 40,000 voters cast their ballots.

John Nickelson, the GOP candidate for the Louisiana parish of Caddo, previously demanded a recount, saying it was "absolutely" called for considering the race's small margin of victory.

After a recount of more than 43,000 votes from the November 18 election, both Nickelson, former Shreveport City Council member, and Democrat Henry Whitehorn, former Shreveport police chief, each received an additional three votes, meaning Whitehorn still took the race with a single vote.

"We had a 28% turnout, but I’m grateful I came out victorious with one vote. It’s like we tell people all the time: Every vote counts. I’m thankful that the results are what they are, and I believe they will stay as they are," Whitehorn told the press after his victory.
