John Dean, who previously served as White House counsel during then-President Richard Nixon's Administration, says that former President Donald Trump is in "trouble" following Maine's decision to disqualify him for their 2024 primary ballot.

On Thursday, Dean appeared on an Edition of Erin Burnett's "Out Front" on CNN where they discussed the recent ruling out of Maine in the latest attempt to challenge Trump's eligibility for president.

Burnett questioned Dean about notions from Trump's campaign and Republicans who have said voters should be the ones to decide if the former president should be considered or the White House.

"Well they like to ignore the Constitution we know that," Dean replied. "I think the Maine decision is very solid. It was fully briefed. There is ample due process in this proceeding and they just lost by a straight honest reading of the 14th Amendment. Trump's in trouble."

Maine’s Secretary of State Shenna Bellows made the determination in a 34-page ruling, noting that the U.S. Constitution "does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government, and Section 336 requires me to act in response." Section 336 is a state law regarding requirements for candidates to run in Maine.

There have been other challenges to Trump's candidacy, some successful like in Colorado, and some unsuccessful in Michigan and Wisconsin.

"He's in trouble wherever this is legitimately raised and addressed," Dean said. "So, yea the Supreme Court is gonna have to weigh in on it. I wanna see this strict constructionists and originalist get around that language."

Dean concluded: "I don't know what they can do with it other than take him off the ballot."
