Joe Biden Is About to Dive Into ‘Democracy Reawakening’ at His Bedside Table

President Joe Biden was photographed clutching a copy of the recent book "Democracy Rewakening: Notes on the State of America" on a Nantucket, Massachusetts sidewalk Friday.

The book, which the vacationing president had just purchased at local bookstore Nantucket Books was written by American historian and author Heather Cox Richardson, who warns of America's ominous seduction by authoritarianism, with a goose by Donald Trump.

Richardson is a Boston College history professor and author of the wildly popular Substack Letters from an American on daily political news.

She makes a case in the book that the current state of affairs in the nation must be examined from a historical perspective, particularly through the chilling lens of authoritarianism as the nation struggles to be true to its ideals.

She accuses a cadre of the uber weathy of plotting the demise of democracy by weaponizing language and promoting false histories that have led Americans down an autocratic path.

New Yorker writer Jane Mayer has called it both a "cause for hope and a call to arms."

But the violence of that day might not be the biggest threat, she warns.

“Democracies," she warns in the book, "die more often through the ballot box than at gunpoint."
