The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to hold a confirmation hearing for the ambassadorship to Israel as early as Oct. 18 following the Hamas attack on Israel last weekend.

President Joe Biden nominated former Obama White House chief of staff and former Secretary of Treasury Jack Lew for the post in early September.

The Senate is currently not in session, but the Biden administration has been working behind the scenes in order to put Lew's confirmation hearing on the schedule as soon as possible, according to NBC News.

Nearly 1,000 Israelis have been reported dead as a result of Hamas' attacks on Israel, which began Saturday. Hundreds more are injured or have been kidnapped, and horrifying stories of murder and rape have been prevalent.

The post has been vacant since July, when Tom Nides stepped aside from the role. Nides has called on the Senate to confirm his successor immediately.

"Jack Lew should be confirmed tomorrow," said Nides over the weekend.
