Biden Accepts House Speaker Johnson’s Official Invite to Deliver State of Union Address
The speech before a joint session of Congress is part of president's constitutional obligations
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-L.a., has officially invited President Joe Biden to address a Joint Session of Congress on March 7 for the State of the Union address and the president has accepted.
"In this moment of great challenge for our country, it is my solemn duty to extend this invitation for you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Thursday, March 7, 2024, so that you may fulfill your obligation under the U.S. Constitution to report on the state of our union," Johnson wrote in a letter to the president on Saturday.
Each year the president delivers remarks before a joint session of Congress as part of his constitutional obligations.
At the last State of the Union event, Biden was invited by then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was ousted in October following a historic decision.
Typically, the State of the Union address is delivered in late January or early February.

The March date could indicate House Republicans are looking to use the earlier time for negotiations to avert a government shutdown ahead of deadline. This year's date is also two days after Super Tuesday. Biden's 2022 address was also given in March.
Last year, Biden's State of the Union address was met with both shouting from House Republicans and a standing ovation for the parents of Tyre Nichols, a Black man killed in a fatal traffic stop by Memphis police officers last January.
